In today’s leadership principle, we will hear how the Lord commanded those entering the Promised Land to enumerate and record their core values to help guide their future.
The Lord called his people to create a visible record of the commands and laws given by the Lord to his people. This memorial was to point the people back to the truth of God’s word so that they could live their lives holding the same core values.
Listen to how this principle was delivered:
1 Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people: “Keep all these commands that I give you today. 2 When you have crossed the Jordan into the land the LORD your God is giving you, set up some large stones and coat them with plaster.
3 Write on them all the words of this law when you have crossed over to enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your ancestors, promised you. 4 And when you have crossed the Jordan, set up these stones on Mount Ebal, as I command you today, and coat them with plaster.
5 Build there an altar to the LORD your God, an altar of stones. Do not use any iron tool on them. 6 Build the altar of the LORD your God with fieldstones and offer burnt offerings on it to the LORD your God.
7 Sacrifice fellowship offerings there, eating them and rejoicing in the presence of the LORD your God. 8 And you shall write very clearly all the words of this law on these stones you have set up.”
(Deuteronomy 27:1-8 NIV11)
Set Up Memorials
Over and over the people of God have been instructed to build various memorials and monuments that were meant to help the people remember the works of the Lord.
- The people were instructed to take stones from the Jordan and set them up as a memorial, pointing to the way the Lord led the people across the river while walking on dry ground.
- They were given the memorial of the Passover meal as a way to remember the deliverance and rescue provided to God’s people as he led them out of Egypt.
- Here we see them building a monument to help them remember the message of God’s commands and laws that were to help the people of God build a new society that was anchored to the truth and dependability of God’s word.
Record Clearly
The Lord called his people to make a careful and clear record of the law on these memorial stones. This calling from God made sure that the people were able to enumerate the laws and commands of God that were to govern their lives moving forward.
The people were not to be left in the dark about how the Lord wanted them to live. All anyone needed to do in order to understand God’s will for their new society was to go and read the law as set forth on these stones.
It is important that we be able to articulate our values as well.
- What are our most important truths and principles of living our lives to God’s glory?
- How well do we record and communicate these core values?
- Do those in your sphere of leadership know what values you hold most dear?
- How do you know that they know?
Celebrate Your Values
The Lord called the people to gather before these monuments and to celebrate. They were specifically called to celebrate the truth of God’s word and God’s commands. They were called to celebrate their values.
This is something that we could all do more often. When we are confident that we know what our God-given values are and sure of how we communicate them to those around us, how do we celebrate the blessing of living by these Godly principles?
A values party might sound weird, but it would definitely help these core principles remain in our minds and hearts.
Reflection
- Can you articulate the core values by which you and your family live your lives?
- How well do we communicate these core values at home?
- How often do you stop and thank God for providing you with his wisdom and understanding as you seek to apply his truth to your life?
