Unfortunately, we often make life a lot harder than it needs to be. We overthink many of the decisions in life that should be pretty straightforward, we complicate what was once simple, and we get lost in our anxieties about whether or not we are doing things the right way.
In today’s devotional, we will hear a powerful passage of scripture that was given in order that all who would take on this God-given wisdom would find their way through the fog of uncertainty.
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
(Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV11)
Trust in the LORD with all your heart
Faith in the Lord, the God of the Bible, is where our connection with God must begin.
We must learn to have confidence in the promises and faithfulness of the Lord.
- Do you believe that the God of Creation loves you?
- Do you see this great love on display in the work and person of Jesus Christ?
- Do you believe that Jesus is the Savior of your soul and the Lord of your life?
Then are you willing to trust God to lead you well and guide you into and through his good plans for your life or are you withholding your trust until the Lord proves himself to you yet again?
Are you willing to trust God to lead you well and guide you into and through his good plans for your life, or are you withholding your trust until the Lord proves Himself to you yet again?
Lean not on your own understanding
What does it look like in your life to lean on your own understanding?
- Do you have all the answers to all of life’s questions?
- Do you assume that you can figure out a solution to every problem you encounter?
- Do you have the answers to the struggles and doubts of all the people around you?
Leaning on our own understanding looks like arrogance, pride, and an assumption that you are more capable, more wise, and more ready to act than the Lord.
- Are you ready and willing to confess that the Lord knows more about what you need than you, in your limited knowledge, can possibly understand?
- Leaning on our own understanding looks like arrogance, pride, and an assumption that we are more capable, wiser, and more ready to act than the Lord.
In all your ways submit to him
- How would you benefit from this aspirational submission?
- Are you willing to submit all of your life and all that you are to God?
- Are there any areas of your thoughts or habits that are off limits to God?
I will be the first to admit that I struggle to submit all of my ways, all of my thoughts, desires, fears, wants, anxieties, words, and actions to the leadership and authority of the Lord.
I may not be able to submit completely yet, but I see the value in trying.
Full submission to the leadership and authority of God in all areas of my life is a great lighthouse, a fantastic point on the horizon that I can set my eyes upon as I learn how to move toward a more complete obedience to the Lord.
And he will make your paths straight
For most of us, this is exactly what we need when we are feeling uncertain and confused about what to do next. We want the Lord to point us the right direction so that we can make the best decision possible.
It is essential that we understand that the Lord does not force our feet onto his path. Instead, he moves in us to mold us and shape us into his will as we trust in him, stop leaning on our own strength, and submit our ways to his leadership and authority.
As we trust and obey, the Lord works in us to place us on his right way.
In Christ,
