Jesus Christ taught his followers that the health of their relationships with others matters as much to the Lord as any outward act of worship. This is a massive truth which, if applied to our lives, would radically alter the way we treat conflict and broken relationships.
Listen to what the Lord said about this call to treat our relationships in a way that pleases the Lord:
23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift.
(Matthew 5:23-24 NIV11)
Context
This teaching is a part of the Sermon on the Mount, a message aimed at helping the disciple of Jesus see the radical change of heart that accompanies the gift of grace and the work of the promised Holy Spirit.
Unexpected
As such, this teaching from the Lord comes to us in an unexpected way. The typical message one might expect about the value of the relationships that surround us in life might fall into one of the categories of treating others fairly, not doing harm, not acting in violence, or speaking words of truth over dishonesty.
Jesus however, challenges his would-be disciples to see that the way in which they treat others is equal to their offerings of worship.
Radical
It is a radical idea to imagine that seeking to make right a broken relationship would be equal in value from God’s perspective to any act of sacrifice or any offering given in worship of the Lord.
- Imagine what changes might come into our treatment of others if we shared God’s heart on this issue.
- Imagine feeling close to God as we might in a time of worship as we apologize for our harsh tone or biting words.
- Imagine the joy that we would receive from knowing that the Lord is honored and lifted high as we choose to not gossip, not criticize, or not lie about those God has placed into our lives.
Worship
According to Jesus Christ, the Lord God Almighty, loves it when we set aside our rights, our pride, and our sense of personal injustice as we do the hard thing and seek reconciliation.
As you get into your day today, ask the Lord to help you see your treatment of others through his eyes. Ask the Lord to help you bring him worship and praise as you show love to those you once treated with contempt and scorn.
In Christ,
Ryan Laden
