In today’s devotional we are going to read a powerful passage of scripture that speaks to the way in which the Lord Jesus Christ brings his real and lasting peace into our daily lives. If you are interested in learning more about this gift of mercy, read on.
15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
(Colossians 1:15-20 NIV11)
Who is Jesus?
In this passage, the Apostle Paul highlights some incredible truths about the person, work, and identity of our Lord Jesus Christ. Allow me to recap these great points:
- Jesus is known to us as God the Son, one with the Father and Spirit.
- Jesus represents the invisible and unknowable attributes of God to us in ways we can comprehend.
- Jesus is the initiator, agent, and purpose of all creation. All that is, exists because Jesus Christ has willed it, he currently sustains it, and has authority over all.
- Jesus created a extension of his glory and presence in this world through the creation of the church.
- Jesus is the fullness, the complete representation of the living God.
What has Jesus Christ done for us?
Ther is no way I could summarize the complete work of the Christ and all of their implications in any amount of space and in any measure of time. But, I love the clarity and simplicity of the Apostle Paul’s words in verse 20.
- Jesus reconciled (brought peace where there was division) all things.
- All that sin separated from the Holy and Righteous One, Jesus Christ has brought back into a state of repair.
- Jesus Christ did this work on the cross. His broken body and spilled blood paid the price for sin and allows Jesus Christ to act as a mediator between all of creation and its creator.
Peace
In verse 20, we are told that Jesus Christ won a real and lasting peace through his sacrifice on the cross. Where we were once at odds with the Lord because of our sin, our rebellion, and our foolishness, the Lord has stepped into this conflict and brought peace.
Jesus gives us peace with God through his act of mercy and grace.
We cannot earn this peace, nor can we repay the Lord for his gift. All we can do is respond to this beautiful act of mercy by receiving it with gratitude.
Fullness
The passage that follows continues to express the fullness of God’s gift of peace and reconciliation through the cross of Christ. Read what follows with a grateful heart.
21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. 22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation.
(Colossians 1:21-22 NIV11)
This is not theoretical.
Because of choice to rebel against God and his authority over me, I made myself into an enemy of God. I was alienated from the Lord in my actions as well as in my thoughts.
In this place of stupidity, I neither wanted God’s help, nor did I do anything to fix the gulf that had grown between myself and the Lord as a result of my sin.
Into this place of complete failure, the Lord Jesus Christ stood between me and the cross. I deserved punishment for my crimes. Jesus Christ chose to take my place and pay the price that I owed.
And now, because of his grace and mercy, I am no longer at odds with the Lord.
Now
Now, Jesus Christ presents me before the Heavenly Father as one that belongs. I am covered by his blood, freed by his sacrifice, and welcomed because of his love.
Because of Jesus, I am no longer an enemy of the Lord. I am a child of the living God, holy, and dearly loved thanks to the mercy of Jesus.
Thank you, Lord.
In Christ,
