The Need to Shout
By: Pastor Bill Muir

God is the powerful King that will subdue his people by his rule. But his kingdom is not of this world, it is of our hearts. He wants to reign not on a throne in a castle but on a throne in our heart. God’s eventual kingdom will be people of every tongue, tribe, and nation.

Let this psalm remind you that God is King.

Psalm 47
Clap your hands, all peoples!
    Shout to God with loud songs of joy!
2 For the Lord, the Most High, is to be feared,
    a great king over all the earth.
3 He subdued peoples under us,
    and nations under our feet.
4 He chose our heritage for us,
    the pride of Jacob whom he loves. Selah

5 God has gone up with a shout,
    the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.
6 Sing praises to God, sing praises!
    Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
7 For God is the King of all the earth;
    sing praises with a psalm![a]

8 God reigns over the nations;
    God sits on his holy throne.
9 The princes of the peoples gather
    as the people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
    he is highly exalted!

I wonder how honest we are when we sing the hymns we love. We may be more honest if we rewrote titles like “Just as I am” to “Just as I Pretend to be.”  “Oh, How I Love Jesus” to “Oh, How I Like Jesus.”  What about “I Surrender All” to “I Surrender Some.”  We are to worship in truth but sometimes, we stretch the truth just a little.

If we seek to become the words we sing, it may help us to sing the words with a louder voice and more conviction.
