Living Hope
By: Pator Victor Borchard

“According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” – 1 Peter 1:3b-5.

When I was in my early 30’s, a pastor told me, “Victor, your heart hasn’t been broken enough. The ten years from 35-45 is when God breaks a person’s heart. Brace for impact.” Looking back on it, he was right. It was almost like clockwork. There for a while, I felt like I was living in the land of shattered dreams and broken promises. Hope seemed lost, maybe even dead.

Thankfully, we’re born again to a living hope. Christ is risen from the dead. There is an inheritance awaiting us that neither moth nor rust can destroy because it’s imperishable. The immorality of this world can’t pollute it because our inheritance is undefiled. The newness, sparkle and shine of this inheritance never dims because it’s unfading. Thieves can’t break in and steal it because it’s kept in heaven for us. Not even our weakness can keep us from it because we’re kept by God’s power.

All this to say that the midlife crisis seems to involve God breaking our hearts. He weans us from hoping in the wrong things to hoping in Christ. We stop trusting in things that don’t last, are vanishing and fleeting to hoping in a salvation that lasts forever.

Our hope is secure, eternal and living. We’ve been born again to it. It’s as sure as the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Today, let’s hope in Him. May your hope be living, breathing, vital and vibrant as God resurrects it from the grave of despair to the promise of new life.
