The Glory and Hope of Parenting
By: Pastor Victor Borchard

When I was a kid, I had a box of twelve Crayola crayons. Eventually, I learned that my pictures looked better if I colored inside the lines. This week, we’ll open a box of twelve parenting crayons. Instead of Crayola, it’s Prayola! We’ll be coloring inside the lines for a great family picture. Two crayons a day, Monday – Saturday. Today we’re coloring with The Glory Crayon and The Hope Crayon.
The Glory Crayon: Under God

“Your family can show how great it is to live under God’s reign of love.” – Ed Moll & Tim Chester

I like being an American citizen. There’s no place on earth that I would rather live. When I travel abroad, I’m especially aware of my American-ness. I want others to see how great it is to be an American citizen.
But even better than my citizenship here is my citizenship there in heaven. The more closely my life aligns with the values of heaven, the more I am aware that this world is not my home. I’m just passing through on my way to my heavenly home.
From here to there, I want my life to show others how great it is to be a heavenly citizen. This is what our families get to do, together. My family and your family can display, reflect and radiate what it’s like to live under the rule of a great and loving King. This is the glory crayon and it shines brilliantly for all the world to see.

The Hope Crayon: Knowing God

“Knowing God is far more important in life than ‘succeeding’ in life or living a life of pleasure.” – Ed Moll & Tim Chester

Hopes and dreams are revealing. Some people hope to succeed in life. Others hope to live a life filled with pleasure and empty of pain. As good and important as both of these are, better still is knowing God.
When we color with this crayon of hope, we boldly lead our family to hope greatly in knowing a great God. Let’s teach our kids to set their hope completely on Jesus, the One who is our blessed hope.
Personal Reflection: I believe knowing God is far more important than succeeding in life or living a life of pleasure. Agree or disagree? Why or why not?

Ephesians 6:1-4, ESV.
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” 4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
