By Victor Borchard
“So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.””
Romans 1:15-17
A couple of years ago, I went to see a dermatologist for a rash. He told me it was either ringworm, hives or lupus (!). Up until that point, I had very little interest in what causes those three things or how to be saved from them. But when I found out that the rash on my skin was a symptom of all three, I was suddenly very interested. I wanted to know how to get rid of this rash. What would it cost? Lupus sounded deadly. How long would I have to live? I had a condition from which I needed salvation.
All people everywhere have a sin condition. We all need to be saved from it. Salvation from sin is what everyone in the world needs the very most. We need to be saved from the power, penalty and presence of sin. Salvation is needed in the past, present and future.
The gospel is how God provides for our greatest need. It is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.
The better we understand our condition, the more we’ll cherish God’s salvation. My physical condition was hives. They’ve since cleared up. My spiritual condition is sin. By God’s grace, it’s gradually clearing up as He is saving me from sin’s penalty, power and presence. Through simple faith in Christ, He’ll do the same for you.
