| “So I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.””|
Romans 1:15-17If you were on trial for murder, how could you get a favorable verdict from a just judge who knew everything about your guilt? If that were me, I’d figure I was doomed. More than anything, I would want to be saved from the gas chamber. But I did the crime. The judge knew it. How on earth could I ever get a favorable verdict from that judge? How could I have the right standing I needed to escape the death penalty? As it turns out, it’s not just a thought experiment. All of us are guilty before the righteous and just judge of all creation who omnisciently knows each of our crimes. Our burning question is this: How can we get a favorable verdict before being sentenced to eternal death? Paul’s answer is the gospel. It reveals the righteousness of God. He’s a just judge. It also provides us with a favorable verdict: righteousness. We receive right standing before this holy God through faith in Christ. Faith, it’s a new way of life for a newly righteous people. Just live by faith.
