Don’t Give Up Serving God Because the Hurt is Helping

By: Victor Borchard

Hurt can be discouraging. When life hurts too much, quitting sounds good. I remember a couple of painful years in Idaho. My mom almost died. So did my wife and baby daughter. Work was tough. Ministry was tougher. But at the end of those two years, I gained a great insight. I saw how far God brought me in my relationship with him. I was so much closer to Jesus after the hurt than I was before. The hurt helped. It was worth it.

2 Corinthians 4:16–18 (ESV)
16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. 17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

I think that’s how it’s going to be when we get to heaven. We’ll see that all of the hurt in this life was worth it. All of the affliction here prepares the glory there. The heavier the load here, the weightier the glory there. This is momentary, that is eternal. When it’s all said and done, it will have all been worth it. Don’t give up because this momentary hurt is helping forever.
