Who We Are Because of God’s Grace
Victor Borchard

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
Ephesians 2:8-10

When I was in college, my wife and I sold our plasma. We gave the money to her friend, Andrea, so that she could donate a kidney. Andrea knew someone who would die without a kidney transplant. Because of the free gift, the kidney recipient was saved from death. They were the saved.

Saved. It’s who we are too by grace through faith in Christ. Your identity as the saved doesn’t have anything to do with your works, thoughts or feelings. You are saved from death by God’s grace through faith in Christ.

It isn’t our works that save us. It’s his work. He’s the one who is doing the work. We are his workmanship. We are the work that God has produced. If God is a poet, then we are his poem. If God is a painter, then we are his painting. If God is a composer, then we are his magnum opus.

Since God is the Creator, then we are his creation, even his new creation:

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus
for good works, which God prepared beforehand,
that we should walk in them.”

Ephesians 2:10

We who were dead in bad works are now created anew for good works. In eternity past, God prepared good works for you to walk in, today! These are like gifts that God has waiting for you to discover today.

Saved. Workmanship. New Creation.

God showcases his grace by graciously giving us this identity: saved, workmanship and new creation.

Today, let’s marvel afresh at the grace of God by considering who he has made us to be.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.”
Ephesians 2:8-10

· Consider these three aspects of your identity in Christ: saved, workmanship & new creation. How does each of them showcase God’s grace? Which of the three do you need to especially trust to be true for you, today?
