A Two-Part Faith – By Pastor Randy McCord

“Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This is what the ancients were commended for … And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”

Hebrews 11:1-2,6

Our bible verses makes this much clear; that our faith must have two parts. We must first believe that God exists, and then also believe that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.

The first part can be understood easily enough. If you did not believe that God existed—that He is a real being who can follow through with His claims—you would not pursue any type of relationship with Him. That is what most people mean when they say, “I believe in God”. They are stating that they believe God is an actual living being. However, they are not necessarily saying anything about the nature of God in that basic statement.

The second portion of verse 6 above is addressing what kind of god He is. What is His nature? Is He kind? Generous? Gracious? Gentle? Or rather, is He harsh? Abrupt? Abrasive? Selfish? Cruel? In effect—what is the nature and personality of God? The first aspect of faith—believing that God exists, gives no clue to those questions. That is why it is significant that God requires us to believe two specific things about him:

1) He exists, and

2) He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.

This second belief gives dramatic insights into His nature, because one who gives rewards is generally generous, open, charitable, kind-natured, and encouraging. But most of all—someone gives you a reward to encourage and reinforce your best efforts in a project. And that is certainly our God. He is continually hoping, and desiring, and empowering us to persevere and achieve at our very best level!

What a marvelous combination! How blessed we are to have such a God, who is a positive and gracious being, and who knows us intimately, and loves us dearly! Make this a topic of thanks in your prayer time today! And ask God to strengthen both of these aspects of your faith.
