THIRSTING AFTER GOD – By Pastor Randy McCord
Do you use a to do list? A list of things you need to finish, to get accomplished, often by a certain time? Life in our world now seems to be pretty demanding, in that we are “expected”, “we need”, “we have to do” certain things. Some are work things, some are family things, some are personal things, some are church things, and on it goes. And, by the time there are a few of each kind of “thing”, our lists have grown quite long, the amount of time available to complete them all has become inadequate; so we have to start rushing around to do them faster, or try to do 2 of them at the same time, or prioritize one over another—even if it isn’t the more important of the two, because we are trying to minimize the negative feedback in case we can’t get them all done. So we keep a list, so we don’t skip one from the overload—and it’s always satisfying to check off an item when it’s done. This process, this task pursuit that occupies so much of our days tends to use up our time, our resources, and our energy; and often we are personally poorer for the experience of it—but, too often we may continue to be ruled by the tyranny of the to do list. It’s tempting to put “seeking God” on that list. Because it is something that needs to get done…. But then that task becomes subject to “urgent” versus the “important” dilemma above, and it often looses. Because, God is always important, but He will not demand that He gets attention like our lesser tasks often do. The result of it all is that our “God seeking” is often not even checked off the list; because it is rarely in the “urgent” category. And days turn into weeks, and then months and years … and the results of that trend are truly tragic. For the sake of some check marks we may forfeit the greatest relationship of our life—and the peace that passes understanding which we so desperately need in our daily lives. So what’s the answer? Take “earnestly seeking God” completely off your to do list. Instead—elevate seeking God to a “need”! “You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water.”Psalm 63:1 God is not a task. He is a relationship. The relationship that your soul needs. We must seek God first, and after we’ve met our soul’s need, then we can move on joyfully to checking-off our to do list in peace! |
