Put On the New Self

“Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self
with its practices and have put on the new self,
which is being renewed in knowledge
in the image of its Creator.”

Colossians 3:5-10

Paul calls believers to put to death earthly things.
Having just set the mind on the things above in verses 1-4, there is no need for worldly things. Therefore, Paul calls on believers to put those to death.

Guy King says, if you are a soldier, you must dress the part; if you are bus driver, you must dress the part; likewise, if you are a Christian, you must do likewise.

It is a calling, to make our lives look like that of a Christian in this way: to be in full obedience to Christ, as one who has died with Christ in baptism. So, like Christ, we must also put to death the things of the flesh. Paul puts it this way in a different letter:

“Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.”
Romans 6:3-4
