“We give thanks to God always for all of you… For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not only in word, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction. You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake.” 1 Thessalonians 1:2a & 4-5, ESV
A few Christmases ago, I picked out a puppy because I liked his color and size. I “elected” Shep to be our puppy. God’s election isn’t like that.
Every four years, we elect a president. We vote for the person who we think will do the best job of leading our country – or is at least the lesser of two evils. God’s election isn’t like that, either.
Recently, Table Rock hired a new office manager. Out of all the applicants, Jessica was chosen or elected to serve in this important role. God’s election is different than this, too.
According to Wayne Grudem, election is, “An act of God before creation in which he chooses some people to be saved, not on account of any foreseen merit in them, but only because of his sovereign good pleasure.”
God’s choice doesn’t have anything to do with our color or size. It has nothing to do with our ability to lead a country or manage an office. It’s unconditional. It happened in eternity past. It lasts through eternity future.
Although none of us completely comprehends election, all of us can thank God for it. That’s what Paul did.
“We give thanks to God always for all of you… For we know, brothers loved by God, that he has chosen you…”
Today, let’s thank God for choosing us, in love, to be in his forever family. It’s not about how good we are. It’s all about how good He is. Thank you, Lord!
