When God saved Jonah out of the belly of the whale it had a transformative effect upon his life. He went where God told him. He preached the Word of the Lord. But when the people repented and God spared the city, Jonah leaked anger instead of joy. God’s salvation needed to have an even more transformative effect upon Jonah’s life. He needed to stand firm and hold tightly to God’s mercy so that when God showed mercy, Jonah could rejoice. But Jonah let mercy slip and so he got angry when he saw God save others.

Paul called upon the Thessalonians to stand firm and hold tightly to the truth of the gospel. If they did so, it would transform their lives.

“So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter.”
2 Thessalonians 2:15, ESV

Martin Luther stood firmly upon the gospel at the Diet of Worms. When called upon to recant the truth of the gospel, he replied, “Here I stand. I cannot do otherwise. God help me. Amen.” It transformed his life and the world. It became known as the Protestant Reformation. It had five solas: Sola Scriptura, Sola Fide, Sola Gratia, Sola Christus and Soli Deo Gloria. Scripture alone. Faith alone. Grace alone. Christ alone. God’s glory alone.

This is where we stand firm: According to the Bible alone, salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone for God’s glory alone. Those who stand here will have their lives changed day-by-day, forever and ever. Hold tightly to these essentials and your life will never be the same.
