Have you ever stopped to consider the amazing fact that the Creator of all things, the Lord God, would desire to be in communication with you and I, the works of his hands? We have such a rich abundance of examples of ways in which the Lord has communicated with us in the past as well as in our present lives.

In today’s devotional, I hope that we can find the time to stop and give God thanks for his desire to communicate with us. It is important that we recognize the God who speaks.

In an effort to help us recognize the amazing gift that is God’s loving attention poured out into our lives, I present you with the following passage of scripture:

1 LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens.

2 Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.

3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?

5 You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. 6 You made them rulers over the works of your hands; you put everything under their feet: 7 all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, 8 the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.

9 LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

(Psalms 8:1-9 NIV11)

What is mankind?

In verse 4 of the Psalm, we hear a question being asked of the Lord that comes from a place of amazement and awe.

The question is an acknowledgement of the fact that the Lord does not owe creation anything and that any form of love, communication, and favor shown to human beings by the Lord is an act of undeserved favor.

The question also acts as an acknowledgment that the Lord does in fact care for us and that we are on his mind. The Lord cares for us and thinks of us. Who are we that we should be shown such grace?

Exalted

In verse 5-8, we are reminded that what we call our daily life and existence is in fact an act of kindness and love. The Lord has given humanity a purpose and mission. We are free to live, work, move, and worship as we desire. We are made in the image of God and are therefore filled with his creative will and meaning.

Who am I that the Lord would call me into his purpose and choose to work in and through me to accomplish his will on this earth?

LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

God is worthy of our praise and our expressions and gratitude. Not only has he given us a place in his creation, he has filled our lives with purpose and meaning if we will submit to his leadership and authority.

LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Pause and reflect on the beauty of creation.

Pause and give thanks for the gift of life.

Pause and give thanks for the gift of significance and meaning.

LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

In Christ,

Ryan Laden
