THE SILENCE OF THE SLEEPING JESUS

The Silence of the Sleeping Jesus
by Pastor Bill Muir

Scripture:
“Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion.” —Mark 4:38

Quote:
“God’s silence is not God’s absence, and His apparent inactivity is not indifference.”

The storm was violent, the boat was filling, and Jesus was sleeping. To the disciples, His sleep looked like unconcern. Yet the sleeping Jesus was still the sovereign Lord. His rest was not carelessness; it revealed the settled confidence of One who knew that neither wind, waves, nor death could overthrow the purposes of His Father. Jesus was not panicked by what terrified everyone else.

There will be seasons when God appears silent. We pray, but circumstances remain unchanged. We cry out, but heaven seems quiet. In those moments, our deepest fear is often not merely that life is difficult, but that God does not care. Yet the cross answers that accusation. The One sleeping in the boat is the One who would eventually give His life for His disciples. We may not understand His timing, but we can never rightly conclude that He is indifferent. His love has already been demonstrated at immeasurable cost.

Reflection:
Where does Jesus seem silent in your life? What conclusions have you drawn about His character because He has not responded in the way or timing you expected?

Application:
Sit quietly for five minutes. Picture Jesus with you in your present storm. Do not demand an immediate answer. Simply repeat: “You are here. You are good. You care for me.”

Prayer:
Jesus, when You seem silent, my imagination fills the silence with fear. I begin to wonder whether You see me, hear me, or care about what is happening. Bring me back to the cross, where Your love was made unmistakably clear. Help me rest in Your presence even before my circumstances change. Amen.
