| The Greater Fear by Pastor Bill Muir Scripture: “They were terrified and asked each other, ‘Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!’” —Mark 4:41 Quote: “The storm made them afraid, but the glory of Jesus made them tremble.” Before Jesus calmed the storm, the disciples were afraid of the wind and waves. After He calmed it, they were overwhelmed by Jesus Himself. They suddenly realized that Someone far greater than the storm was sitting beside them. Their question—“Who is this?”—is the central question of the passage. The miracle is not merely that Jesus stopped the storm. The miracle reveals the identity of the One who was with them all along. We often want enough of Jesus to make life manageable, but not enough to overturn our lives with wonder. The disciples discovered that Jesus was not merely a helpful teacher who could improve their circumstances. He was the holy Lord before whom creation itself bowed. Yet this awesome King chose to enter their boat, share their journey, hear their frightened cries, and carry them safely forward. The One we should fear above all others is also the One who loves us beyond measure. Reflection: Has Jesus become too familiar or manageable to you? When was the last time you were filled with awe at His holiness, power, beauty, and grace? Application: Read Mark 4:35–41 slowly three times. On the first reading, notice the storm. On the second, notice the disciples. On the third, look only at Jesus. End by answering His question: “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” Prayer: Jesus, open my eyes to see who You truly are. Forgive me for reducing You to someone who simply makes my life easier. You are Creator, King, Savior, and Lord. Fill me with holy wonder. Let my fear of circumstances become small beside my reverence for You. Thank You that the Lord of the wind and waves has chosen to be with me. Amen. |
