THE THIEF THAT MAKES ENOUGH NEVER ENOUGH

Greed: The Thief That Makes Enough Never Enough

“Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”
Luke 12:15 (NIV)

“Prosperity knits a man to the World. He feels that he is ‘finding his place in it’, while really it is finding its place in him.”
C. S. Lewis

Greed is the thief that convinces us the life we have is insufficient and the life we want is always somewhere beyond our reach. If we had more money, a nicer home, a better car, greater success, or more recognition, then we could finally be satisfied. But the problem with greed is that enough never arrives. Every achievement creates a new desire. Every possession eventually becomes ordinary. We spend our lives pursuing what we do not have while overlooking the richness of what we have already been given. Greed robs us not only of contentment but also of our ability to enjoy the present.

Jesus illustrated this danger in the parable of the rich fool. The man had accumulated such an abundant harvest that he decided to tear down his barns and build larger ones. He imagined that once he had stored enough possessions, he could finally relax and enjoy life. But he failed to recognize the uncertainty of his own life and the poverty of a soul that lives only for accumulation. His tragedy was not that he possessed wealth. It was that his wealth had become the center of his existence, while the deeper purposes of life had been neglected. He was preparing to enjoy life someday while failing to understand what made life truly rich.

There is nothing wrong with working diligently, saving responsibly, or enjoying the material blessings God provides. The danger comes when we believe those things are the source of abundant life. Some of the richest moments we will ever experience cost almost nothing: a conversation with someone we love, a walk through a beautiful place, laughter around a table, or the quiet awareness of God’s presence. Contentment allows us to discover that the life we have been seeking may already be available in the life we are living. Jesus invites us to stop measuring life by what we possess and begin measuring it by the richness of our relationship with God and others.

Reflection

What are you waiting to acquire before you believe you can truly enjoy life? How might the pursuit of more be keeping you from appreciating what God has already given you?

Application

Identify five blessings you already possess and thank God for each one. Choose to enjoy something simple today without purchasing, acquiring, or achieving anything new. Look for one opportunity to practice generosity.

Prayer

Father, forgive me for confusing abundance with accumulation. Free me from the endless pursuit of more. Teach me gratitude, contentment, and generosity. Open my eyes to the richness of the life You have already given me. May I find my deepest satisfaction in knowing and enjoying You. Amen. Bill Muir
