THIS IS TABLE ROCK FELLOWSHIP – PASTOR RYAN LADEN
Take Stock
Where have you encountered opposition and trial this week?
Who has presented themselves as your opponent?
How have you been tempted to mirror the evil that has been shown to you this week?
Encouragement
In addition to our study of Matthew 5:38-48 this week, there is much more in the message of God’s Word that speaks to our calling to respond to opposition and trial as missionaries of Christ rather than in our own strength. The following message from the Apostle Peter speaks to this important challenge:
“Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. For,
“Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech.
They must turn from evil and do good; they must seek peace and pursue it.
For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.””
Verse 8
In verse 8 we are challenged to draw strength from the other members of the Body of Christ. When we face times of doubt, hardship, trial, and pain, we need to reach out to those brothers and sisters in Christ with whom the Lord has blessed us.
· How can you be more like-minded, sympathetic, and loving to the other believers that surround you?
Verse 9
You reap what you sow. If you sow insult, injury, and worldly anger toward others, no matter what they have done to deserve it, you are the one that loses. You reap strife and pain if you choose to treat others in this way.
· How can you show others the blessing that you would like to receive?
Verse 10
Again, if you want to experience blessing, goodness, and love from others, you must sow these seeds in your words, attitudes, and actions.
· How can you keep your tongue from evil?
· How can you say no to deceitful speech today?
Verse 12
When we turn from the Lord and choose to engage in evil, especially evil toward other believers, we place ourselves in a posture of rebellion to the Lord. When we reject the temptation to mirror evil, we can avoid these times of pain and struggle.
· Do you believe that the Lord’s eyes are upon you?
· Do you believe that the Lord listens to you?
· How can you reject the temptation to turn away?
In Christ,
