BOXING DAY

THIS IS TABLE ROCK FELLOWSHIPPASTOR RYAN LADEN (DEVOTIONALS)

Boxing Day

The day after Christmas has been referred to as “Boxing Day” by many who belonged to the British Commonwealth for a very long time. The tradition was that after the Christmas celebrations were completed, the household staff of the upper classes would be granted a day off to celebrate Christmas with their own families.

As the staff would leave to head home, they were invited to box up the leftovers from Christmas and share these with their friends and family. Thus the term.

Reflection

As you wind down from the Christmas build up, maybe today is your day to stop and reflect.

If you have been too busy cooking, cleaning, travelling, wrapping, unwrapping, eating, and egg-nogging to really reflect on the gift that is the coming of the Christ into our world, lives, and flesh, then perhaps today is that day.

Prop Up

Consider propping your feet up, grabbing a warm drink, and spending a moment of your day today giving thanks to the Lord for the good that he has done in your life, and for the glorious hope that he has provided in his gift of eternal life.

One passage of scripture that might help you in this endeavor is provided below. Read and reflect at your own pace:

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

Colossians 3:15 -17 NIV11

Peace

Let the peace of Christ rule. Let Christ be king in your heart. Submit your anxious thoughts to the Lord as you remind yourself of his right and authority over you. Whatever chaos you feel you must carry today, lay it at the cross and accept the gift of peace in exchange.

Be Thankful

Are you feeling disappointed, disgruntled today? That makes sense. We put too much of our emotional health into the opinions of others. We allow the ups and downs of gift giving and receiving to dictate our mood and attitude. We expect too much from others and feel disappointed yet again.

The solution? Be thankful.

Give God praise for the good he has done. Thank the Lord for all the days of your life, and proclaim his glory as you think about the days of eternity to come.

Dwell

This is one word that can make all the difference. How are you dwelling in the Lord today?

How are you resting in him, abiding in his presence, wallowing in his truth today?

Dwell less in the land of distraction today. Put the phone away (after your devotion, of course) and spend some time dwelling in the one who loves you so much that he made a way for you to enter into his presence for eternity.

Reflect

As you go back into your day, remember and meditate on these words:

And whatever you do,
whether in word or deed,
do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus,
giving thanks to God the Father through him.

In Christ,
