Connected

It is important for us to stop and reflect on the ways in which the manger and the cross are connected. These two events in the ministry and mission of Jesus Christ are dependent upon one another, and neither has much value or meaning without one another.

Manger

Without the manger, the cross is robbed of its power.

If Jesus was born into this world as merely man, the result of normal human parentage, then his death on the cross, however noble or sacrificial, would not be capable of bearing the sins of humanity. One person might die for another to aid them in this life, but their death would have no impact on their standing before a Holy and Righteous God.

Cross

Without the cross, the manger accomplishes nothing.

If Jesus came into the world as fully God, and yet did not take action on our behalf — if he did not complete the purpose of the law, fulfill all the requirements of atonement and forgiveness, then the manger is just an awe-inspiring story.

Both

We need Jesus to be born into this world, full-God and fully-man. We need Jesus to be united with us as he bears our sin, dying in our place, fulfilling the totality of the law of God as it relates to atonement and forgiveness of sin.

We need Jesus to begin as one of us, and to die instead of us.

Reflection

So, as we go through this day, let us purposefully stop and give thanks for the fact that the manger and the cross are united. Let’s give God praise for how he met our deepest needs, even as he entered into this world as a helpless baby in a manger.

““He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.” For “you were like sheep going astray,”
but now you have returned to the Shepherd
