Imagine what your life would look like, imagine the condition of your health, imagine the richness of your most important relationships if you were able to give everything you do or say to the Lord as an act of true worship. In today’s devotional built off of the end of Colossians 3, we are challenged to do much more than imagine such a life-changing commitment.
Let’s listen to the ending of this great teaching:
12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
(Colossians 3:12-17 NIV11)
Let Peace Rule
In verse 15, the follower of Christ is encouraged to allow the gift of peace that is given in and through Jesus Christ to take priority in our lives.
How does Jesus Christ bring peace into your life?
One of the clearest examples of the gift of peace given by Jesus Christ can be seen in the gift of redemption. Jesus paid the price for our sins. He bought our eternal future with his sacrifice. We are no longer our own but belong to the Lord thanks to the work of Jesus.
Because we have been included in the gift of salvation through the grace of Christ, we can be at peace with God. We are no longer enemies and rebels. Instead, we are sinners who have been made saints by the work of Jesus Christ.
Be Thankful
At the end of verse 15 be hear two powerful words, “Be thankful.”
We need to spend more time in our daily lives focused on that which is worthy of thanks. We are too easily distracted by the problems and annoyances of life. Because of this, we can become overly focused on the problems of this life while ignoring the amazing gifts we have already received in the work of Jesus on the cross, the gift of the Holy Spirit, the amazing truth of God’s Word, and the encouragement and help offered through the Body of Christ, his church.
Stop and give God thanks for the good he has done in your life today. Try not to unnecessarily focus on the negatives and problems of your day today. Be thankful.
Dwell As You
In verse 16 we heard, “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you…”.
As we allow the message of good news to settle into our hearts and minds, we are called to be active in our faith, seeking to be a part of the following:
- Teach – What the Lord shows us in his Word we should willingly show to others.
- Admonish – Spur others on to greater faith in Christ. If they will listen to you, challenge them to be all in with the Lord.
- Praise – Sing to the Lord. Give him your worship and your praise. He alone is worthy. He alone can receive the gift of your worship. Give it freely.
Meditation of Your Heart
As you go through your day today, stop and focus on the powerful message of verse 17, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
Whatever You Do
It is amazing to think that our work today can be of eternal value if we will commit it to the Lord as an act of worship.
What do you have planned for today?
No matter how small the work might be or how many people might ever know about it, whatever you commit to the Lord as an act of worship and devotion will be received by the Lord as having eternal value.
As you go through your day, focus on giving even the smallest of tasks or conversations to the Lord as a gift of worship. See how this change of attitude impacts the way you look at even the most common of tasks.
In Christ,
