Life is distracting. Some days it can seem impossible to focus our time and attention on what matters most. There are simply too many distractions, too many emergencies, too many demands being made on our time. In today’s devotional, we are invited to do something about our distracted minds as we focus our attention on the praise of our Lord and God.
1 I will exalt you, my God and King, and praise your name forever and ever.
2 I will praise you every day; yes, I will praise you forever.
3 Great is the LORD! He is most worthy of praise! No one can measure his greatness.
4 Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts; let them proclaim your power.
5 I will meditate on your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles.
6 Your awe-inspiring deeds will be on every tongue; I will proclaim your greatness.
7 Everyone will share the story of your wonderful goodness; they will sing with joy about your righteousness.
(Psalms 145:1-7 NIV11)
Praise
The Psalmist spoke to our hearts desire when he said, “I will praise you every day; yes, I will praise you forever.” For the faithful, we desire this kind of consistent praise and worship of the Lord. We want to focus on the goodness and glory of God every day, even if we find ourselves distracted and busy.
Tell
One of the ways that we can make this kind of daily praise a reality is to make a habit of talking to others about the greatness of the Lord. In verse 4 we heard, “Let each generation tell its children of your mighty acts”. As we make a habit of praying with our families at meals, talking about what we heard in church, speaking about what the Lord has taught us in our daily reading of the Bible, we will find ourselves growing in the habit of praise.
Meditate
Biblical meditation is the opposite of the modern form of emptying one’s self and trying to exist in a state of nothingness. Biblical meditation requires us to fix a truth from God’s word in our minds as we go throughout our day.
The Psalmist wants to meditate on, “your majestic, glorious splendor and your wonderful miracles.” This kind of meditation will find the Psalmist naming the acts of God that bring awe and wonder into his mind. By making a point of focusing on these glorious attributes, the Psalmist will bring praise of the Lord with him wherever he goes.
What about you?
- What will you choose as your meditation from God’s word today?
- What glorious acts of the Lord will you name and focus on as you go through your schedule?
- Name them and spend your time and attention wisely as you lift them up in praise to the Lord.
In Christ,
