One of the most important lessons we have sought to learn from our study of the ten commandments relates to our calling to mirror what we see when we look into the heart of God. The Lord desires that his people should reflect the nature and values of the Creator to one another and to the surrounding world.

One of the values that we are called to reflect, as articulated in the ninth commandment (“You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.” Exodus 20:16), can be heard in a great passage from the book of Numbers.

God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act?

Does he promise and not fulfill?

(Numbers 23:19 NIV11)

Not a man

What a great truth. Let’s break this down.

The God of Covenant and Creation is not like you and me. The Lord is not a fickle, insecure, easily swayed, opinionated, and mostly ignorant human being. He is other.

I am wildly encouraged by this truth. If the Lord were like me, made in my image, look out. The world and everything in it would be doomed. But I am glad that the Lord is unique, different, and greater.

Not a liar

The Lord speaks truth. When we choose to deceive others, we typically do so because we lack the strength to secure whatever it is we hope our lies will bring to us. We lie to make ourselves look better because we feel that we are less-than.

The Lord is not like us in our weakness and insecurity. He does not need to manipulate, cajole, and lie to get done what he cannot do on his own. What the Lord wants, he gets. What the Lord choses to do, is completed.

There is no need for the strong to lie.

Faithful

What the Lord promises to do, he does. Unlike you and me, the Lord does not tell people what they want to hear so that we can hide the fact that we have not and will not be able to make good on our commitments.

Again, this is a sign of the Lord’s strength. He has no need to make false commitments or promise anything that he does not plan on completing. He does not need to make anyone feel good about his failures as he does not disappoint.

A Promise for Today

Considering the fact that the Lord is a truth-telling, promise-keeping, commitment honoring being beyond our understanding, we should be encouraged by the promises that have been made by the Lord for our benefit.

I want to send you off with the following promise of God in your heart and mind as you face this day. Consider these words and stand firm in the promise of God.

7 Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. 8 He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

(1 Corinthians 1:7-9 NIV11)
