In this, the fourth and final devotion drawn from the message of Colossians 3:15-17, we encounter the life giving gift of purpose. If we allow Christ to be the Lord of our heart, then we receive the gift of being able to baptize any action and all responsibilities to the Lord in an act of eternal purpose and mission. Let’s read this great passage one more time and hear what the Lord has for us today.
15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.
16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.
17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
(Colossians 3:15-17 NIV11)
Recap
Just as a reminder, we have heard the following key points in our devotional study of this passage:
- Jesus Christ wants to be the Lord of every part of you, including your will and desires (heart).
- If we are in Christ, he will create in us a love for his people, the church.
- If we love the people of God, we will seek unity and peace in the church.
- If Christ rules in our hearts, we will discover a hunger and passion for the Word of God.
- As the Word of God teaches us and instructs us, we will develop a love of praising the Lord in times of musical praise and corporate worship.
Verse 17
And now we come to the end of this passage as we encounter the gift of God’s purpose and mission as heard in verse seventeen, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:17 NIV11)
Schedule
Let me help you apply this powerful truth by asking you to stop and think about all that you know you have on your schedule today.
- Consider all of your appointments, emails, phone calls, meetings, and whatever else you can predict getting into during your day.
- Would you consider many (if any) of these tasks and responsibilities to be eternal in their value and significance?
Baptize
Now, consider applying the principle found in Colossians 3:17 to your day.
- What would it look like if you were to baptize your schedule?
- What would it look like for you to commit your work, your conversations, and your acts of service to the Lord Jesus Christ as an act of worship and praise?
- How would the dedication of the mundane in your day help all that you say and do take on eternal value as you choose to worship the Lord in the details?
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, I want to give you my day as an act of worship. I believe that you want to use all that I am doing and all that I say to bring your kingdom into the lives of those around me. Please help me see every detail and every word of my day as an opportunity to be used by you in your eternal work.
In Christ,
Ryan Laden
