“Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” This line from Acts 3:6 is a banger. It can stand with any catch phrase, one-liner, or marketing slogan throughout human history. This power statement was given by the Apostle Peter as he and the Apostle John shared the gospel with a man who had been born unable to use his legs. In this one line, we can hear a great message that perhaps we need to take with us into our day.

Context

First, let me remind you of the context into which this one line gospel message was given.

  •   Peter and John were going to meet some people for prayer.
  •   They had a routine encounter with a beggar on the street.
  •   This man had been unable to walk his whole life.
  •   Everyone who frequented the Jewish Temple knew this man.
  •   Instead of passing the man by, and instead of giving him a temporary fix…
  •   They stopped and allowed the Holy Spirit to meet the man in his state of need.

Message

Let’s think about the various layers of meaning included in Peter’s reply to the man’s request for money:

  •   Peter and John saw the person sitting on that street. He was more than a “beggar,” he was a man that Jesus Christ loved and died to redeem from his sins.
  •   Peter did not allow the man in need to dictate the response of the Lord. Just because this man thought that money was what he needed most does not mean that this is what the Lord wanted to provide. Peter allowed the Spirit to meet the man’s true need.
  •   This was a bold response. Peter and John were not afraid to expose their faith in Jesus to this man or those who were watching. They were not embarrassed by their faith.
  •   In the name of Jesus Christ… Not, “God bless you,” or “Be blessed.” They proclaimed the name of the one they believed was a t work in their lives and the name of the one who wanted to be at work in the life of this man sitting before them.
  •   Walk! Not ambiguous. Peter’s message was clear and powerful. In the name of Jesus… WALK. He said that to a man whose legs were weak, atrophied, and in an obvious state of malfunction. The boldness leaps off the page.

Application

That was great for them, but how does this situation impact my life? Good question. Consider the following:

  •   God places people in your path every day. Some of these people need you to see them.
  •   You and I need to stop looking away from the neighbor in need.
  •   We need to stop pretending that it is none of our business. Stop acting like it is offensive to step into the lives of those God places before us and for whom we are called to be a blessing.
  •   Just because someone is asking you for one thing, does not mean that this is what they need most from you or from the Lord. Pray and ask God to show you how to meet the true need.
  •   Above all, minister in the powerful name of Jesus Christ. Do not do your acts of righteousness for the church, for your own glory, or just because God loves our goodness.

If you speak, say it in the name of Jesus.

If you act, do it in the name of Jesus.

Be bold today.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, I know you have used others in my life to help show me the right way forward in my times of struggle. Help me be a similar blessing to others. Show me who to minister to and enable me to speak and act in your powerful name.
