Is there someone in your life whose presence, real or virtual, brings you a sense of safety, well-being, or calm? I can think of a dozen people whose presence brings the opposite into my life (no names), but there are precious few that I might even consider to be peacemakers in my life.

In today’s devotional, we will look at the role that Jesus Christ plays in the provision of God’s peace. This will not be an exhaustive study, but it will give you a starting point from which you can launch further inquiry.

Three

To that end, we will be looking at three passages from scripture that speak to the way in which the Lord provides his peace to his children.

6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.

(Isaiah 9:6-7 NIV11)

Immanuel

The Immanuel, God with us, the promised Savior, was to enter into creation as a baby boy. This child would do more than fulfill a set of promises and prophecies: he would be for us what we need most.

The Savior would be something that we cannot comprehend. He would be one of us, while also being the one who created us and the one who sustains us.

As part of his ministry and mission, the Savior would be the Prince of Peace. Not only is Jesus Christ our counsellor, our loving father, and mighty God, be is also the gift and source of real and lasting peace.

Jesus is our peace.

On the cross, Jesus Christ makes peace between us and the God that we have rejected through our sin and rebellion. Through his broken body and spilled blood, we are able to experience real peace with our Creator.

2 “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”

4 He will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they will live securely, for then his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth. 5 And he will be our peace.

(Micah 5:2, 4-5a NIV11)

Direct

Speaking of the promised Messiah, the prophet Micah pinpointed the birthplace of Jesus Christ and spoke to the way in which the Lord would personally supply his peace to his people.

I love the directness of this message.

The Lord did not say that he would do something that would give us the opportunity to experience peace; no, he promised to step into our lives and become the peace we need.

Presence

The Lord provides us peace through his presence.

Like those we thought of earlier, people who bring a sense of calm into our lives when they are near, the Lord meets our need for peace is we will welcome him into our place of struggle.

25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

(John 14:25-27 NIV11)

Spirit

The Lord Jesus Christ provides his peace for us through the work and presence of the Holy Spirit. The Lord is present with all who call on his name for salvation.

His presence in our lives brings us wisdom, guidance, power, and strength. And when we are in the presence of the Lord, we are able to rest, able to relax, let down our guard, and be at peace.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, I am in need of your presence today. I need to experience the peace that only you can provide. Help me to stop reaching for other sources of peace, help me to stop looking for other people and other substances that I hope will mimic a tiny portion of the peace that only your presence in my life can bring. Be my peace Lord.

In Christ,
