“WHY ARE YOU SO AFRAID?”

The Storm Reveals What Is Within Us
by Pastor Bill Muir

Scripture:
“Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” —Mark 4:40

Quote:
“Storms do not create everything within us; often they reveal what has been there all along.”

The storm exposed the disciples’ interior world. Before the wind rose, they appeared calm and confident. But when the boat began to fill, fear uncovered what words had concealed. They believed in Jesus, but their trust had not yet reached the deepest places of their hearts. The storm revealed how quickly they could move from following Him to accusing Him.

Difficulties often reveal us more truthfully than comfortable seasons do. Pressure uncovers our fears, our need for control, our anger, and the things we depend upon for security. This revelation is not meant to shame us. Jesus exposes what is within us so that He can transform it. The storm becomes a mirror, showing us where we still need healing, surrender, and a deeper confidence in Him.

Reflection:
What has your present storm revealed about you? Has it uncovered fear, anger, resentment, self-protection, impatience, or a need to control the outcome?

Application:
Identify one reaction the storm has exposed in you. Do not excuse or condemn it. Bring it honestly to Jesus and ask, “What would trust look like in this part of my life?”

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, I often want You to change my circumstances while avoiding what those circumstances reveal within me. Give me courage to look honestly at my heart. Show me where fear, pride, anger, or control have taken root. Do not merely rescue me from the storm; transform me through it. Make me more peaceful, trusting, humble, and like You. Amen.
