THIS IS TABLE ROCK FELLOWSHIP – PASTOR BILL MUIR (DEVOTIONALS)
“We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works.”
Ephesians 2:10
“For me to be a saint means to be myself.”
Thomas Merton
God did not make you accidentally. Your personality, gifts, experiences, passions, limitations, temperament, and story are not meaningless pieces scattered across your life. Beneath the sin, fear, wounds, false identities, and expectations others have placed upon you is a person God intentionally created. Spiritual transformation does not erase that person. It slowly uncovers them.
We spend tremendous energy comparing ourselves. Someone is smarter, louder, younger, funnier, stronger, more successful, more spiritual, or more gifted. Eventually we begin trying to become someone God never intended us to be. But a rose does not glorify God by trying to become an oak tree. It glorifies God by becoming fully what it was created to become. The same is true of us. Jesus does not invite us into imitation of somebody else’s personality. He restores us into the person the Father intended.
Your true self is not simply “whatever feels authentic.” Our true self is the person we become as Christ removes what sin, fear, pride, shame, and brokenness have added to us. Perhaps sanctification is partly the beautiful work of God removing everything false until the person He imagined begins to emerge. You don’t need to become impressive. You need to become increasingly truthful, whole, loving, free, and fully yourself in Christ.
Reflection
Where am I still comparing myself, performing for others, or trying to become someone God did not create me to be?
Application
Name three qualities God has uniquely placed in you. Thank Him for each one. Then use one of them today for someone else’s good rather than measuring it against someone else’s gift.
Prayer
Father, thank You for creating me intentionally. Free me from comparison, pretending, and the need to impress. Remove what sin and fear have distorted in me, and uncover the person You created me to become. Help me live today as my true self in Christ. Amen. Bill Muir
