The Thief That Keeps Us from Hearing God
“The LORD was not in the wind… the LORD was not in the earthquake… And after the fire came a gentle whisper.”
1 Kings 19:11–12 (NIV)
“All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit quietly in a room alone.”
Unknown
Noise is a thief that fills our lives with so many sounds, voices, messages, and distractions that we struggle to hear what matters most. We wake up to alarms, turn on the news, listen to music, check our phones, answer messages, watch television, and fill nearly every quiet moment with stimulation. Even when the world around us becomes silent, our minds may continue racing with thoughts, concerns, and responsibilities. We have become so accustomed to noise that silence can feel uncomfortable. Yet in filling every moment with sound, we may be losing our ability to listen deeply to God, ourselves, and the people around us.
When Elijah encountered God on Mount Horeb, he experienced a powerful wind, an earthquake, and a fire. Yet the biblical account tells us that the Lord was not in those dramatic events. Afterward came a gentle whisper. The passage reminds us that God does not always reveal Himself through the spectacular or dramatic. Sometimes we become aware of His presence through quiet attentiveness. Jesus Himself regularly withdrew from the crowds to pray in solitude. If Jesus made room for silence and communion with His Father, how much more do we need to create space in our lives to listen?
Imagine sitting with someone you love who is trying to tell you something important while a television is playing, your phone is buzzing, and your thoughts are occupied with something else. You may hear their words without truly listening. Our relationship with God can become like that. He has given us His Word, His Spirit, and the invitation to live in communion with Him, yet we can become so distracted that we fail to recognize His presence. Silence does not guarantee that we will hear something extraordinary. It simply creates space for us to become attentive to the God who is already with us.
Reflection
What kinds of noise dominate your daily life? Why might silence feel uncomfortable, and what could you discover if you made more room for it?
Application
Spend ten minutes today without your phone, television, music, or other distractions. Read a short passage of Scripture, sit quietly, and invite God to make you more aware of His presence. Resist the urge to fill the silence.
Prayer
Father, forgive me for filling my life with so much noise that I rarely become still before You. Quiet my thoughts and help me listen. Teach me to recognize Your presence through Scripture, prayer, and the ordinary moments of life. Give me a heart that is attentive to Your leading. Amen. Bill Muir
