Seek The Things Above “Seek the things that are above … Set your mind on things that are above.” Colossians 3:1 & 2 Colossians 3:1–4 pulls back the curtain on realities that are unbelievable, except by the miracle of God’s Spirit in us — realities that we cannot know from any other source than the Bible — realities that are so astounding that, if we see them for what they really are, we will be radically, and pervasively changed. Here, in these same verses, Paul calls us to have a new kind of mindset, or intentional perspective, that accords with this astounding reality. And he urges us onward, to the path of obedience and grace, which flows naturally from such an understanding of the things above — the heavenly realities, as described in Colossians 3:5–4:6. Therefore, seek. This is the pathway to the mindset shaped by the things above: Seek them. Pursue them. Chase them. Track them down. Seize them. Hold onto them. Gaze at them. Dig into them. Understand them. Taste them. Savor them. Treasure them. If it hasn’t been made abundantly clear yet: this pursuit cannot be a passive endeavor. No one gains the mindset of heaven laying on a sofa. But the opposite is equally true: no one gains the mindset of heaven by sheer grit and willpower. What is this paradox? Here’s the deep truth: the only seeking that succeeds is the seeking by those who are already dead. And what do I mean by this? The only seeking of the true life hidden in God, is the seeking by those who have already laid down their lives — entrusting their mind, body, and eternal soul to Christ, who is in God. Therefore, we who have placed all our faith in Christ do not struggle alone to make the “death” or the “life” occur as we so desperately need them. We are instead, in the reality of His salvation, seeking the things above from a place of joy — and full confidence — that we will take hold of the heavenly realities through His grace alone; because we first entrusted our everything to Jesus, who is the Way, the Truth, the Resurrection, and the Life (John 4:16, 11:25). This is why we reach out expectantly, and with overwhelming gratitude; looking up with a longing gaze; eagerly putting on the mindset of heaven, and seeking the things above. |
