In today’s devotional I offer up to you a Psalm of David that brings me hope and joy in the Lord.

Before you read the passage below, stop and pray that the Lord will use his word to speak to your heart and to give you his perspective on your circumstances today:

1 May Yahweh answer you in a day of trouble; may the name of Jacob’s God protect you. 2 May He send you help from the sanctuary and sustain you from Zion. 3 May He remember all your offerings and accept your burnt offering.

4 May He give you what your heart desires and fulfill your whole purpose. 5 Let us shout for joy at your victory and lift the banner in the name of our God. May Yahweh fulfill all your requests.

6 Now I know that the LORD gives victory to His anointed; He will answer him from His holy heaven with mighty victories from His right hand. 7 Some take pride in chariots, and others in horses, but we take pride in the name of Yahweh our God. 8 They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand firm.

9 LORD, give victory to the king! May He answer us on the day that we call.

(Psalms 20:1-9 Holman Christian Standard Bible)

Verses 1-3

  •   Have you brought your troubles before the Lord?
  •   Have you named them and laid them at the feet of Jesus Christ?
  •   Have you asked the Lord for his protection and security as you go into times of trial and challenge?

Verses 4-5

  •   Can you name the desires of your heart? – Seriously, do you know what you want?
  •   When you bring these desires before the Lord, does the Holy Spirit convict or challenge you about those things you are bringing to God as requests?
  •   Do your desires align with God’s kingdom and purpose? How do you know?
  •   Is God going to get the glory if he fulfills your heart’s desire?

May Yahweh fulfill all your requests.

Verses 6-8

  •   If you were to take pride only in what the Lord provides and wills in your life, what would be on your list of praiseworthy actions and accomplishments?
  •   If you were to take pride in your own strength and in your wealth and standing, then what would you have left to give to God as an offering of worship?

Verse 9

  •   The victory belongs to the Lord. Whatever your battle is today, can you give both the fight and the glory to God, claiming none of his work as your own?

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, you know what I need before I ask and yet you call me to open my heart and my mouth as I come before you. You want to hear about my needs and you want to act in my life so that I can see you at work. Open my spiritual eyes today. Help me look past the flesh and blood battle and see how you overcome all things for your own glory. Help me see your fingerprints all around me today.

In Christ,

Ryan Laden
