Hurry: The Thief That Makes Us Miss Our Own Lives
Day 3 of 7
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one.”
Luke 10:41–42 (NIV)
“Hurry is the great enemy of spiritual life in our day.”
Dallas Willard
Hurry is a thief that convinces us the next moment is more important than the moment we are living. We hurry through breakfast to get to work. We hurry through work to get home. We hurry through the week to reach the weekend. We hurry through the year to get to vacation. And one day we may discover that we have hurried through much of our lives. We were always going somewhere, accomplishing something, or preparing for what came next, but rarely stopped long enough to experience the life happening around us.
Martha was busy preparing a meal for Jesus while Mary sat at His feet and listened. Martha was not doing something wrong by serving. Her problem was that she had become so distracted and anxious about her responsibilities that she was missing the presence of the very Person she was serving. Jesus gently reminded her that Mary had chosen what was better. The lesson is not that responsibilities are unimportant, but that we can become so busy doing things for Jesus that we miss being with Jesus. Hurry can turn even good activities into obstacles to experiencing God’s presence.
Imagine taking a family vacation and being so focused on reaching the destination that you fail to enjoy the journey. You miss the conversations in the car, the beautiful scenery, the laughter, and the unexpected moments along the way. What if the vacation began the moment you left the driveway? What if life itself is like that? The abundant life does not begin when we finish our responsibilities, solve our problems, or finally have enough time. It is available now. Jesus invites us to slow down, become attentive, and discover the richness of living in the moment He has given us.
Reflection
Why do you sometimes feel compelled to hurry even when there is no real reason to rush? What moments or relationships are you missing because you are always focused on what comes next?
Application
Choose one ordinary activity today—eating a meal, taking a walk, driving somewhere, or talking with someone—and deliberately slow down. Give that experience your full attention. Remind yourself that this moment is part of the life God has given you.
Prayer
Jesus, forgive me for rushing through the precious life You have given me. Teach me to slow down, become attentive, and enjoy Your presence. Help me recognize that the life I am seeking is not always somewhere ahead of me. It is available today, right where my feet are. Amen. Bill Muir
