One of the hardest and most confronting truths in God’s Word to his people is that our treatment of others matters to God and will bring into our lives blessings or curses. We do not often think about the fact that the clear message given by God to his people is that our love for God is most often expressed in the way that we show love to others. Likewise, when we fail to love others in our lives, this lack of love reflects a lack of real love for God in those times of strife and selfishness.
The following teaching from Jesus Christ speaks to the way that our treatment of others impacts our daily lives:
36 “Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
37 Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.
38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
(Luke 6:36-38 NIV11)
Mercy
- How has the Lord been merciful to you?
- Name one person that you know you need to show mercy to this week.
Judgment
- Think of a time when you were openly judged by another person. How did their actions and words impact you?
- Name someone that you have struggled to treat without judgment that perhaps you could have handled better.
Condemnation
- How are judgment and condemnation different in your eyes?
- What would it feel like to be condemned by another person?
- How can you avoid making others feel like that?
Forgiveness
- Is there anyone in your life that has refused to forgive you?
- How did or might that make you feel?
- Are you withholding forgiveness from another?
- Are you open to allowing the Lord to help you learn how to forgive this person?
Giving
- Who in your life would you describe as being a generous giver?
- How can you apply this challenge to be someone who gives more than they receive from others?
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for being the leader in all of these areas. You are the giver of all good things, the master of mercy, and the compassionate forgiver of sins. Help me to think before I act today. To listen to your heart before I open my mouth and hurt another. Help me to ask for forgiveness from those I injure. Help me grant forgiveness to those who have hurt me.
In Christ,
Ryan Laden
