As we continue to read the opening of the book of Acts and listen for the way in which the Lord prepared his people for the gift of the Spirit and the commissioning of the church, we come to a statement that speaks volumes. In Acts 1:3, we hear a reminder that the resurrection of Jesus Christ was seen and experienced by a large number of the disciples of Jesus.
3 After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.
(Acts 1:3 NIV11)
Appearances
There were eleven different appearances of the resurrected Christ provided within the message of the four Gospels. Added to these, we also hear about the post-ascension appearance of the resurrected Christ as Saul traveled to Damascus to persecute Christians.
Below, I have provided you with a very brief summary (in approximate chronological order) of these resurrection appearances for your study and consideration:
1 – Easter Morning
Jesus appeared to Mary Magdalene – John 20:11-18, Mark 16:9-11
2 – Easter Morning
Jesus later appeared to the other women (Mary mother of James, Salome, Joanna, etc.). – Matthew 28:8–10
3 – Easter Day
Jesus appeared to Peter, but we do not know any details of this encounter except that it happened in Jerusalem. – Luke 24:34
4 – Easter Afternoon
The two disciples, Cleopas and another not named, walked seven miles from Jerusalem to the town of Emmaus. As they went, they were taught by Jesus (who remained unrecognized). They broke bread with Jesus and then he left them in awe. – Luke 24:13–35; Mark 16:12–13.
5 – Easter Evening
Jesus appeared inside a locked room and spent time with the disciples (minus Thomas). – Luke 24:36–43; John 20:19–23
6 – The Sunday Following Easter
Jesus again appears in the locked upper room and ministers to Thomas. – John 20:24–29.
7 – Later that Week
Peter and the disciples went fishing, caught nothing, saw Jesus on the shore, and Peter swam in to be with Jesus. Jesus ministered to Peter and had breakfast with the others. – John 21:1–14.
8 – Toward the End of the 40 days
Jesus and the disciples were together in the Galilee and Jesus gave them the Great Commission. – Matthew 28:16–20.
9 – Before the End of the 40 Days
Paul speaks of the time when Jesus appeared to more than 500 disciples at one time. This could have been the time of the Great Commission, or another time altogether. – 1 Corinthians 15:6.
10 – Close to the Ascension
Paul again references an appearance of the Lord to James and the other Apostles which preceded his appearance to Saul. – 1 Corinthians 15:7.
11 – Day 40
Near the town of Bethany (home of Lazarus), Jesus meets with the disciples and gives them his final words before ascending to the right hand of God the Father. – Luke 24:50–53; Acts 1:3–12.
12 – Less than a Year After the Ascension
Jesus met Saul on his way to persecute the church and turned his life around. – Acts 9:1–9.
Meditation
As you go through your day today, consider what the resurrection of Jesus Christ means to you.
- How does the resurrection of Jesus Christ impact your life in the here and now?
- How does his resurrection impact your life in eternity?
- Spend a moment or two in prayer, giving God thanks for this gift.
In Christ,
